Mini Pause #117 | What Training Gave Me

I originally got into training purely for aesthetics.

I wanted a tiny waist and glutes that left the room two minutes after I did.

And I did that.

But I stayed.

I stayed because of what lifting gave me.

Lifting taught me how to love myself. How to give myself grace.

How to be in touch with my body and be patient with myself.

How to be proud of myself for doing very difficult things.

These are skills and qualities I wasn’t given as a child.

Strength training helped me become the parent to myself that I always needed.

(Let that sit for a minute.)

Before training, my body was a scary place.

It felt like an overwhelming sea of emotions and trauma waiting to drown me.

It was safer to stay in my head. To calculate everything so I could control everything.

I treated my body like a vehicle that carried my brain around.

Training changed that.

It taught me how to feel my feelings and accept my body exactly as it is…

Because the gym is democratic. Weights tell the truth.

45 pounds has always been and will always be 45 pounds.

There’s no supplement, surgery, or shortcut that will build muscle for you.

All you can do is pick up that heavy shit and let it confront you.

[💪 LIFT will get you there, whether you’re brand-new or have been lifting for 20 years. This is the strength training program I follow to this day.]

That weight doesn’t care what you’ve been through… or what you’re going through.

A dumbbell doesn’t care that you had a different outcome in mind.

The barbell has no sympathy for your stress or the demands on your time.

The weight will be there for you. Consistently forcing you to reckon with your body as it is.

And that’s what I let it do.

Even if that means letting my body shake for a minute after a set… even if that meant unexpectedly bursting into tears after squats.

For me, strength training became a way to process the difficult things I could remember… and eventually the things I couldn’t remember but knew lived in my body.

[✨ No weights available today? Use push-ups to get that release.]

It gave me a path back to my body being my own.

It helped me feel safe in my skin.

That process of building a relationship with your body matters far more than any waist-to-hip ratio, glute pump, or clothing size ever could.

So yes, I love the way I look.

But to get here, I had to learn some really hard lessons about loving myself when I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror.

I had to learn to love myself when I felt ugly, unloveable, and unworthy.

More than the way I look, what I really love now, at 48, is how I feel inside my body.

I love the pride of knowing I did this. On purpose. By myself.

I built this on the days I didn’t want to train.

I built this even when the workout was awful.

I built this even when I didn’t feel like I was worth the investment.

I built this for myself – and for Baby Stephy, who came along for the healing ride.

No one can sell you that kind of pride.

You earn it.

You gift it to yourself.

If you’re in a season where training feels slow, confronting, or deeply humbling, I want you to know that this is often where the real gifts are.

Not just in the body you build, but in the relationship you build with yourself, and your inner child, along the way.

[🎶 The Bettys on Instagram are helping me build this incredible Spotify Playlist to help you move when it’s hard.]

With love,

Dr. Stephanie

Mini Pause #116 | It’s actually not just your hormones

I almost spit out my coffee this week when I was reading a research paper.

(I said almost. I didn’t want to waste my coffee – but I definitely paused mid-sip… a bona fide Big Deal for this caffeine queen.)

The paper stunned me because it confirmed something I’ve been saying for years:

Hormone changes don’t automatically cause fat gain.

So many people (influencers, advertisers, TV shows, your own mother, your own DOCTOR!) claim the opposite. They want you to feel relieved that it’s not your fault and there’s nothing you can do. Congratulations! You’re off the hook!

But they’re wrong.

The science officially proves that you’re very much on the hook. You have more control than you’ve been told.

And before you bristle at that – stay with me.

Because this isn’t blame.

It’s leverage. It means you have options.

Women have passed a story through generations: Your body changes when your hormones change.

Nothing you can do about it. Happened to your mother, happened to your grandmother, gonna happen to you.

“It’s my hormones.”

It’s clean. Simple. Convenient.

Also wildly incomplete… and extremely profitable.

See, Betty, if estrogen is the villain, you can’t be the heroine. You have to be the patient.

You have to wait for someone or something to save you (from your own biology?)

You have to accept. Comply.

And listen – I am not anti-hormone therapy. Not even a little.

[✨ Grab my free HRT Guide, which includes questions for your doc.]

But I am deeply suspicious of anything that removes a woman’s agency and calls it empowerment.

What I See – Over and Over Again

I see women who are doing everything “right.” Classes, cardio, clean eating, light weights that never dared to get heavier… and yet her body feels soft and unresponsive to all the effort.

→ She tells herself, “It’s my hormones.”

I see women who used to be consistent but lost their footing somewhere between career, kids, aging parents, and exhaustion. She wants to come back to herself but feels discouraged now that her body is changing.

→ She tells herself, “It’s my hormones.”

I see women who train really freaking hard – lifting, sweating, pushing… but who under-eat and push harder instead of recovering because they’re trying to do better than their mothers…

→ Who told themselves, “It’s my hormones.”

And then I see women who have figured it out. Who lift with intention and eat to build. Who take recovery seriously and defy the idea that she can’t be exactly who she wants to be because of her age.

→ She refuses to tell herself, “It’s my hormones.”

Betty, if you see yourself in one of these women, I want to encourage you:

These are not four drastically different women who are genetically programmed to get different results.

These are four different moments.

And they reinforce exactly what this research paper proved.

Women In Perimenopause Are Not Hormonally Broken

I’ve seen this clinically for over two decades.

Women enter their 40s with:

Low muscle mass

Declining bone density (yes, already!)

Compromised joints, tendons, and ligaments

Years of under-eating

Stress that never fully resolved

Less movement than they think

Estrogen changes don’t create a new problem.

Estrogen changes expose the problems that used to tolerate being swept under the rug.

Start with Muscle

The single most important step you can take to rise above hormonal fatalism?

Build muscle.

Muscle is metabolic currency.

It determines how your body handles glucose.
Your bone density.
Your joint support.

Without actively building muscle? Everything downstream gets harder… and it’s not because you failed.

It’s because you were never taught how important muscle is.

It’s a loop.

Less muscle → less movement → more fat gain → less desire to move

And around we go.

Add in joints that hurt, tendons that don’t tolerate load, and a fried nervous system… and suddenly you stop being able to push yourself into results.

… and you start to believe the lie, “It’s my hormones.”

We didn’t get here by accident, Betty.

We were trained up real good through years of:

More cardio
Less food
Push for smaller
Fewer calories
More “discipline”

We laid down our muscle at the altar of skinny.

Of course we did. That was the assignment.

So Now What?

You have a choice.

You can spiral.

You can bail and say, “It’s my hormones.”

Or you can step into something new.

Your body is a reflection of inputs… and you are in control of the inputs.

You can build muscle.
Not casually. Progressively. Intentionally. With devotion.

You can move daily.
Walk. Lift. Stretch. As your baseline, not as a punishment.

You can eat like your body is worth building.
Protein. CARBS. Enough food. Consistently.

You can train your joints, tendons, and ligaments.
Connective tissue strength determines how much weight your muscles can move.

You can respect recovery.
Let your body adapt to the work.

When you devote yourself to changing the inputs, your body will respond. It won’t be overnight, but it will come, and it will last.

“It’s my hormones” is not supported by science, and we have the research paper to prove it.

Our new story is: “My inputs changed, and my body is expressing that.”

In that story, you’re not waiting to be fixed.

You’re building.

If hormone therapy supports you, get after it. No judgment here.

But understand the hierarchy:

Hormones are a lever – not the entire system.

Yes to hormone therapy if that’s what works for you.

Yes, AND strength training.
Yes, AND movement.
Yes, AND enough food.
Yes, AND joint health.
Yes, AND recovery.

You are so powerful. You are the heroine of your story.

Not broken. Not late.

Under-built. Ready to be MORE.

If this is clicking for you and you’re ready to build, LIFT was designed for this moment.

This is the framework I still use at 48 to build a body that reflects the work.

[💪 Start Here]

Saluting you in your purposeful rebuild,

Dr. Stephanie

Mini Pause #95 | The Olive Oil Glow Guide Why Extra-Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) Is the Sexiest Thing You Can Add to Your Midlife Routine

Forget bubble baths and facials. If I could hand you one bottle that works on your metabolism, your skin, and your sanity… it would be olive oil.

Yes, really. That bottle sitting in your pantry has more to do with your blood sugar, appetite, and glow than half the imported specialty skincare women are spending thousands on.

Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) is a daily beauty and metabolism tool:

    • It steadies blood sugar and appetite signals.
    • Supports body composition and hormone balance.
    • Unlocks vitamins A, D, E, and K from plants for stronger hair, skin, and nails.
    • Calms the low-grade inflammation that accelerates aging.

And for bonus points, I even use it as my makeup remover and body moisturizer.

Let’s dig into the nerdy magic behind it… and how to pick the right bottle.

Olive Oil and Metabolism: A Daily Hormone Hack

Olive Oil Improves Insulin Sensitivity

Here’s what most people miss: metabolism isn’t just about calories. It’s about how your cells respond to hormones.

In the landmark PREDIMED trials, participants on a Mediterranean diet rich in EVOO saw major drops in cardiovascular disease risk without changing their body weight. Why? Because monounsaturated fats (MUFAs) improved insulin sensitivity, HDL, triglycerides, and blood pressure.

AKA the whole cardiometabolic picture flipped the script while the scale stayed steady.

And since estrogen decline during perimenopause tends to make our lipid profiles go a little haywire (HDL down, triglycerides up), EVOO’s fatty acids help keep things balanced.

So, yeah. Olive oil is a literal balm for your metabolism.

Olive Oil Calms the “Menopause Munchies”

You know that “I need something but I don’t know what” feeling that hits at 3 p.m.? When your hormones start dancing out of control like they’re the celebrities on the first week of Dancing with the Stars?

Olive oil can quietly come in and save the day.

A moment for my Dark Roasters: Inside your gut, oleic acid from EVOO transforms into oleoylethanolamide (OEA) – a molecule that flips the “meal-stop” switch in your brain through PPAR-α activation. PMC

Translation: you feel satisfied sooner, without the white-knuckle hunger.

Translation of the translation: EVOO helps you regulate portion control without relying on willpower or hope.

Olive Oil and Body Composition

When you swap out refined carbs or saturated fats for EVOO, your body composition changes… literally.

Several RCTs in women found that drizzling (or gulping… you do you) that spicy spoonful of EVOO leads to better fat loss and waist management than soybean or vegetable oils, and less long-term weight gain overall.

If you feel like your waistline has clocked out right alongside your attention span, EVOO is your guy. It helps preserve muscle and redistribute fat more favorably… without starving. Just smarter fuel.

Olive Oil for Skin, Hair, and Nails: Beauty from the Inside Out

Okay, let’s nerd out on beauty science for a second.

When you eat olive oil, your gut builds micelles – tiny lipid bubbles that transport fat-soluble nutrients from your food (like carotenoids and vitamins A, D, E, and K). These nutrients make their way into your skin, where they boost hydration, elasticity, and glow. PubMed

In fact, regular consumption of EVOO can:

    • Increase carotenoid uptake (retinoid precursors = fewer fine lines). PubMed
    • Deliver ~2 mg vitamin E per tablespoon for barrier repair.
    • Provide vitamin K for circulation and healing.
    • Supply squalene, an antioxidant lipid that protects skin from UV damage.

And because EVOO’s polyphenols (hydroxytyrosol, oleocanthal, and oleacein) reduce oxidative stress, they actually help cellular aging in skin. I’m particularly drawn to this because I have spent more than my fair share of summers under the Italian and Greek sun, sunbathing until I had the most epic tans… and now I’m starting to see some of those summers leave their marks on my cheeks. PLOS

If you’re chasing that “dewy, glow-from-within” look, EVOO is a non-negotiable.

Bonus: it removes makeup and doubles as the perfect post-shower moisturizer. A dime-sized amount on your face, and a pea for each leg. Any more and you’re just slippery.

EVOO and “Inflammaging”: Calming the Fire Within

Ever taken a sip of olive oil so fresh and peppery it made you cough? That’s the good stuff, baby. The peppery bite comes from oleocanthal, and it’s so hardcore that I’m not afraid to talk about it as an ice breaker at a party.

(I only party with people who are down to geek out about this kind of thing. Otherwise, I’m probably staying home.)

Oleocanthal activates the same anti-inflammatory pathways (COX-1 and COX-2 inhibition) as ibuprofen, but without the GI side effects. That spicy, throat-tickle burn means your oil is alive with anti-inflammatory power and ready to kick pain’s butt… gently and with tender care, of course.

When you consume it regularly, studies show it reduces key markers of aging:

    • CRP (C-reactive protein)
    • IL-6 (interleukin-6)
    • Endothelial dysfunction (aka the early stages of vascular aging)

In other words, olive oil dials down inflammaging – the smoldering background inflammation that accelerates everything from joint pain to wrinkles. PubMed PubMed+2MDPI+2

Olive Oil, Gut Health, and the Skin-Immune Axis

This part gets fascinating. EVOO helps reduce gut permeability, a.k.a. “leaky gut,” which means fewer inflammatory molecules leak into your bloodstream. PMC

The result?

    • Lower systemic inflammation
    • Calmer immune response
    • Clearer, more resilient skin

Healthy gut, healthy glow. Don’t overcomplicate it.

How to Choose a Good Bottle of Olive Oil

With so many diluted, blended, or heat-damaged oils on the market, choosing a real EVOO matters.

Look for:

    • Dark glass bottles (protects from light)
    • Harvest date on the label — fresher = better
    • Peppery or bitter finish to signal high polyphenol content
    • The words “Extra Virgin Olive Oil”

Store it smart:
Keep it away from heat or sunlight, cap tightly, and finish an opened bottle within 2–3 months for maximum freshness.

Pair with color:

Combine EVOO with:

    • Tomatoes, carrots, leafy greens → boosts vitamin absorption
    • Beans or whole grains → steadier glucose
    • Fish, eggs, or yogurt → better satiety and omega synergy PubMed

Daily dose:
1–2 tablespoons per day is enough to get the full range of benefits.

How to Use Olive Oil Like a Pro (A Breakdown)

Olive Oil for Metabolism

At lunch, dress your salad or grain bowl with a 3:1 EVOO-to-lemon ratio. That combo boosts carotenoid uptake and keeps blood sugar stable. PubMed

Plus, it tastes delicious and can transport you to the Mediterranean seaside if you close your eyes tightly enough.

Olive Oil for Body Composition

At dinner, skip butter and finish your protein and veggies with garlic-infused EVOO. It’s satisfying, heart-healthy, and helps prevent late-night snacking. PMC

Olive Oil for Glow

Build a “glow bowl” with tomatoes, carrots, baby kale, chickpeas, and top it with EVOO. Add some sea salt and an acid like citrus or apple cider vinegar for a boost of flavor. PubMed+1

You’ll get a burst of carotenoids and vitamin E that shows up on your skin within weeks.

Olive Oil for Hormone Balance

Try eggs or Greek yogurt with EVOO, salt, and herbs.

The protein + MUFA combo triggers OEA, meaning fewer cravings and more focus through the morning. PMC

Olive Oil for Beauty

Use EVOO as a natural cleanser. A dime-sized amount melts away makeup, and a pea-sized amount is perfect for legs and arms. It’s the cleanest moisturizer you’ll ever own.

Dr. Stephanie’s Pick: Kyoord High-Phenolic Olive Oil

When it comes to olive oil, freshness is everything. Most store-bought oils have been sitting for months (or years), losing potency.

If you want to experience olive oil as more than a drizzle… if you want to really do something for your body… I recommend Kyoord. It’s what I use in my own kitchen and skin.

Kyoord was founded by Dr. Limor Goren, a cancer researcher and molecular biologist. In the lab during her PhD studies, she discovered that oleocanthal-rich olive oil can kill cancer cells.

Read the study here.

High-phenolic EVOOs like Kyoord aren’t your grocery store blends. They’re nature’s pharmaco-nutrition in a bottle.

Why High Phenolic EVOO Matters

High-phenolic olive oils are packed with polyphenols – powerful plant compounds that protect against oxidative stress, inflammation, and metabolic disorders.

Oleocanthal and oleacein (two of Kyoord’s hero molecules) have been studied for their roles in:

    • Reducing inflammation and oxidative stress
    • Improving cholesterol and heart health
    • Supporting longevity and brain health
    • All this from that delicious zing-maker on your salad!?

Daily consumption of high-phenolic EVOO has been linked to better cardiovascular, metabolic, and neuroprotective outcomes.

Long story short: It keeps your body younger for longer. Sign me all the way up.

What Makes Kyoord Unique

    • Exceptionally high polyphenol content… up to 8x higher than standard EVOOs.
    • Single-origin, small-batch, and hand-harvested from family groves in Corfu, Greece.
    • Cold-extracted within hours to preserve phenolic potency.
    • Third-party tested with results publicly available for transparency. We LOVE a controlled study.
    • Distinctively robust and peppery taste, the natural marker of high oleocanthal levels (if it doesn’t tickle your throat, it’s not the good stuff).

Surprisingly, it can also handle high-heat cooking and frying while maintaining its benefits.

Yes, yes, at the end of the day, this is olive oil. But it’s sooo much more. It’s a concentrated source of bioactive compounds designed to support longevity from your plate up.

Learn more or shop Kyoord here.

TL;DR: The Olive Oil Manifesto

    • EVOO improves insulin sensitivity, cholesterol, and blood pressure.
    • It supports appetite control and fat metabolism through OEA signaling.
    • It reduces inflammation, gut permeability, and markers of aging.
    • It enhances vitamin absorption and collagen support for youthful skin.
    • It tastes amazing and makes your food more satisfying.
    • Try Kyoord, the brand I buy for my family, to know that you’re getting the best of the best, backed by research.

This is not just a pantry item. It’s a longevity elixir. A metabolic, hormonal, and beauty tool wrapped in one golden spoonful.

How Eight Sleep’s Pod 5 Saved My Marriage and My Sanity

Ladies, we need to have an honest conversation about something that's affecting 80% of menopausal women but somehow still feels taboo to discuss: hot flashes are stealing our sleep, our energy, and yes – they're impacting our relationships.

For two years, my husband and I had what I euphemistically called a “sleep divorce.” I'd moved to the guest room because my nighttime hot flashes were waking us both up multiple times per night. I'd go from dead asleep to drenched in sweat, frantically kicking off covers and turning on fans. He'd wake up to me moving around, adjusting the thermostat, opening windows. Neither of us was getting quality sleep, and the resentment was building.

I tried everything – cooling pillows, moisture-wicking pajamas, a bedside fan that sounded like a jet engine. Nothing worked consistently. The hot flashes came when they wanted to, and I was at their mercy. Until I discovered Eight Sleep's Pod 5 and their revolutionary Hot Flash Mode.

The Science Behind the Sleepless Nights

Let's talk about what's actually happening during a hot flash. Your hypothalamus – your body's internal thermostat – suddenly decides your core temperature is too high and triggers a massive cooling response. Your blood vessels dilate, you start sweating profusely, and your body temperature can spike dramatically within minutes.

Traditional cooling solutions try to react after the hot flash has already started. By then, you're awake, uncomfortable, and facing at least 20-30 minutes of trying to fall back asleep. The real breakthrough with Eight Sleep's technology is that it can cool you down before the hot flash fully wakes you up.

Enter the Pod 5: Sleep Technology That Actually Gets It

The Pod 5 isn't just another cooling mattress pad. It's a complete optimization system that uses precision temperature control ranging from 55°F to 110°F. But here's what makes it revolutionary for women like us: it can cool each side of the bed independently.

This means my side can be set to arctic temperatures while my husband's side remains at his preferred warmth. No more thermostat wars. No more separate bedrooms. The Pod uses AI-driven Autopilot to learn your sleep patterns and automatically adjusts temperature throughout the night based on your body's natural rhythms.

The new Pod 5 introduces their Blanket technology, which extends temperature regulation across your entire body, not just the mattress surface. When a hot flash hits, you're getting cooling relief from head to toe.

Hot Flash Mode: The Feature That Changed Everything

Here's where the Pod 5 becomes truly transformative for menopausal women. Hot Flash Mode is specifically designed for our reality. When you feel a hot flash coming on, you can instantly activate emergency cooling by tapping the bed or pressing a button in the app.

Clinical data shows a 52% reduction in hot flashes among users – that's backed by real-world data from thousands of women, not just marketing claims. The system learns your patterns and can even anticipate when you're likely to experience temperature fluctuations.

I keep the app open on my nightstand, and the moment I feel that familiar warming sensation, I hit the play button. The Pod immediately drops to maximum cooling, often preventing the hot flash from fully developing. When it works – which is most of the time – I stay asleep. When it doesn't completely stop the hot flash, the cooling is so effective that I'm back to sleep within minutes instead of lying awake for an hour.

Beyond Temperature: Complete Sleep Optimization

The Pod 5 goes far beyond temperature control. Built-in sensors monitor your sleep stages, heart rate variability, and respiratory rate without requiring any wearables. Every morning, I get a detailed report showing exactly how my sleep quality improved – or what disrupted it.

The snoring detection feature has been a relationship saver too. The Pod can detect snoring through chest vibrations and automatically adjust the bed's elevation to reduce or stop it entirely. No more nudging your partner awake or suffering through their snoring because you're both too tired to deal with it.

The new Autopilot Health Check feature provides deeper insights into trends like abnormal heartbeats and breathing disruptions. For those of us navigating the health changes that come with midlife, this kind of preventative health tracking is invaluable.

The Sleep Divorce Solution

After six months with the Pod 5, my husband and I are sleeping in the same bed again. I'm not exaggerating when I say this technology saved our marriage. The constant sleep disruption was affecting our mood, our intimacy, and our basic ability to be kind to each other during the day.

Now, I sleep through the night consistently for the first time in years. I wake up feeling actually rested instead of dragging through the morning. My energy levels are stable throughout the day, my cognitive function is sharper, and honestly – I'm a much more pleasant person to live with.

My husband gets uninterrupted sleep at his ideal temperature while I stay cool enough to manage my hot flashes. The dual-zone temperature control means we're both getting optimal sleep without compromise.

The Data Doesn't Lie

Clinical studies show that Pod users get up to one hour more quality sleep per night. That translates to:

  • 34% increase in daytime energy levels
  • 44% faster time to fall asleep
  • Up to 24% more deep sleep
  • Reduction in middle-of-the-night wake time by up to 3 hours per month

For women dealing with hot flashes, these numbers represent the difference between functional and dysfunctional days. When you're not fighting your sleep environment, your body can actually rest and recover.

The Technology That Actually Works

What sets the Pod 5 apart from other sleep solutions is the precision and consistency. This isn't a cooling fan that might help sometimes. The Pod maintains exact temperatures all night long, automatically adjusting based on your sleep cycles and learning preferences.

The AI continuously adapts to your changing needs. As hormonal fluctuations vary throughout the month, the Pod learns these patterns and adjusts accordingly. It's like having a personal sleep technician monitoring and optimizing your rest every single night.

The integration with the Pod's elevation features means you can address multiple sleep disruptors simultaneously. Acid reflux, snoring, circulation issues – the Pod can adjust elevation while maintaining your perfect temperature.

Investment in Your Future Self

Let's be honest about the investment. The Pod 5 isn't cheap, but consider the alternative costs: sleep medications, separate bedrooms, relationship counseling, the health impacts of chronic sleep deprivation. When you calculate the cost per hour of quality sleep over the Pod's lifespan, it becomes one of the most valuable health investments you can make.

The 30-day trial period removes the risk entirely. You can test whether the Pod 5 works for your specific sleep challenges in your own bed, with your own partner, under real-life conditions.

Why Sleep Technology for Women Matters

For too long, sleep solutions have been designed with men's physiology as the default. Men don't experience hot flashes. They don't deal with the dramatic hormonal fluctuations that affect sleep quality throughout the month and across life stages.

Eight Sleep is finally building technology that acknowledges women's unique sleep challenges. Hot Flash Mode isn't an afterthought – it's a core feature designed from the ground up for our needs.

The Bottom Line

Menopause doesn't have to mean accepting poor sleep as inevitable. Hot flashes don't have to control your nights or your days. You don't have to choose between your comfort and your partner's sleep quality.

The Pod 5 with Hot Flash Mode represents the first sleep technology that actually addresses the reality of what menopausal women experience. It's not a band-aid solution – it's a fundamental shift in how we can manage this phase of our lives.

I'm not exaggerating when I say the Pod 5 changed my life and saved my marriage. For the first time in years, I have control over my sleep environment. I wake up feeling like myself again. My husband and I are sharing a bed – and actually sleeping well together.

If you're struggling with hot flashes, night sweats, or any sleep disruption that's affecting your quality of life, this isn't just another gadget to try. It's a legitimate solution backed by clinical data and real-world results from thousands of women who've reclaimed their nights.

Your sleep matters. Your comfort matters. Your relationship matters. The Pod 5 can help you take control of all three.

Mini Pause #83: Your Gut Has Trust Issues

TL;DR

What if your gut doesn't just digest food but also… decides if you're safe? According to Dr. Steven Gundry, your microbiome is like your body's border patrol. And when it senses something dangerous, whether it's a food or a feeling, it shuts everything down. Chronic inflammation, autoimmune flare-ups, even low energy? All signs your gut no longer trusts you.

WHY

We're used to thinking of food as fuel but a more accurate way to think about this is food is a signal.

If your gut senses something unfamiliar or threatening, it doesn't ask questions. It assumes danger and triggers a full-body immune response.

And it's not just what you eat:

  • It's how you eat
  • It's when you eat
  • It's what emotional state you're in when you eat it.

WHAT

🧠 The Gut-Brain Axis Runs the Show: Your gut bacteria send signals directly to your brain—especially when they sense a threat. Ever feel foggy, anxious, or fatigued after eating “healthy” food? It might be your microbiome’s red alert.

🥬 Plant Defense Mechanisms Are Real: Some plants don’t want to be eaten. Lectins (like those in beans, tomatoes, and grains) can punch tiny holes in your gut lining—what Gundry calls “gut wall breach.” Once that barrier is compromised, immune chaos begins.

⛅ Your Immune System is Exhausted: If your gut keeps encountering “danger” every day—whether from poor diet, stress, or over-exercise—it eventually becomes hyperreactive. The result? Autoimmunity, joint pain, mood swings, and sluggish metabolism.

🧃 Green Juice ≠ Gut Health: Even some “clean” foods might be inflammatory to your body. The key isn’t eating less—it’s eating what your gut recognizes as safe.

HOW

🧭 Test & Learn: Your gut’s tolerance is personal. Elimination diets aren’t trendy—they’re necessary. Strip down to the basics and slowly reintroduce foods to see what sets off the alarm.

🍽️ Food Order Matters: Start meals with leafy greens or a gentle fat (like avocado) to coat your gut lining. Then add protein. Save carbs for last.

Time-Restricted Eating = Immune Reset: Giving your gut long breaks between meals (12–16 hours) helps it repair damage and calm inflammation—no pills required.

🧘 Stress is a Gut Saboteur: Cortisol alters your microbiome composition within hours. If you’re eating kale while stressed, your gut still hears “danger.”

NOW

  • Audit Your “Healthy” Foods: What are you eating that might  be triggering your body's defense systems?
  • Reframe Your Gut: It's not a garbage disposal. It's an intelligent filter deciding what's safe.
  • Think Like a Diplomat: Your goal isn't to “fight inflammation” – it's to earn back your gut's trust.

Mini Pause #82: Bloated? Tired? Stressed? Start Here

TL;DR

Your gut is ground zero for mood, hormones, energy, immunity… basically everything.
In perimenopause and menopause, gut health takes a hit, and it shows up as bloat, fatigue, anxiety, skin changes, weight gain, and even acne.

The key to improving digestion in midlife is multifold – there are supplements you can take before you eat, and even exercise can improve gut health!

Think of your gut like a garden — and get the right gardener (probiotics), fertilizer (prebiotics), and soil conditions (diverse food, less stress) to keep it thriving.

WHY (Our Gut Changes In Perimenopause)

In midlife, your hormones dip, your stress rises, and your digestive system gets a little… sluggish.

Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone all rely on your gut microbiome to break down and excrete them properly. When your gut is leaky or inflamed, it can reabsorb “used” hormones (hello, estrogen dominance), leading to mood swings, tender breasts, cravings, and brain fog.

Even just the regular foods we eat on a daily basis can start causing a lot of distention, bloating and gas.

WHAT You Can Do for a Better Belly

✔ ️ Start with a Spore-Based Probiotic: Unlike most probiotics that die in your stomach acid, spores are dormant in the capsule, wake up in your intestines, and actually change the gut landscape. Using a gardener analogy, they like to pull weeds (bad bacteria), and feed the good bacteria to bring balance back to your microbiome

✔️ Add Prebiotics (The Fertilizer): These feed your good bacteria — but only if they’re targeted. Some prebiotics feed the bad guys too, so choose carefully or go with a supplement like Just Thrive’s Prebiotic that only nourishes the good flora

✔️ Eat the Rainbow: Diversity of plant foods = diversity of microbes. More color, more fiber, more phytonutrients, more microbial magic. Here I tend to follow Dr. Terry Wahls advice where she recommends 9 servings of vegetables and fruit: 3 servings of green leaves, 3 servings of sulfur rich and 3 servings of bright colors.

✔ ️ Love Your Ferments (But Don’t Rely On Them): Sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir are all amazing. They support gut health, but keep in mind most bacteria in fermented foods die before reaching your colon.

✔️ Reduce Gut Stressors:

  • Skip antibacterial sprays (they kill good bacteria too) and quit it with the hand sanitizers!!! Remember in the good ol’days when we used soap? That is the ideal way to clean your hands.
  • Go organic when you can (to avoid glyphosate)
  • Take walks, breathe, meditate — your stress hormones mess with your gut lining

Supplements That Support a Happy Gut

Once you’ve got your gut gardener (spore-based probiotic1) and your fertilizer (prebiotic) in place, there are other MVPs that can really help your gut thrive — especially if you’re in perimenopause or menopause and noticing more bloating, sluggish digestion, and food sensitivity.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Before Meals
A splash of raw, unfiltered ACV in water 15–20 minutes before meals can help:

  • Stimulate stomach acid (which declines with age/hormone shifts)
  • Improve protein digestion
  • Reduce post-meal bloating
  • Support blood sugar balance

➡️ Tip: Start with 1 tsp in warm water before meals, work up to 1 Tbsp if tolerated.

2. Digestive Enzymes
As we age (especially in midlife), we make less stomach acid and digestive enzymes which means even healthy meals can sit heavier than they once did.

Digestive enzyme blends help break down:

  • Protein (protease)
  • Fat (lipase)
  • Carbs (amylase)
  • Fiber (cellulase)

Look for broad-spectrum enzyme blends2, and take them before your first bite of food, if you can around 20 minutes prior to eating.

3. L-Glutamine
This amino acid is gut lining gold. It helps:

  • Repair a “leaky gut”
  • Calm inflammation
  • Support regularity

➡️ Tip: Powdered glutamine is tasteless and easy to stir into water or smoothies. Dose: ~5g/day.

4. Collagen or Bone Broth
Both contain:

  • Glycine and proline: key for gut lining integrity
  • Gelatin: helpful for soothing inflammation
  • Bonus: glowy skin + joint love

Choose grass-fed, unflavored options3, or sip on bone broth between meals.

5. Zinc + Vitamin A
Both support the regeneration of the gut lining and immune system. A deficiency in either can delay gut healing.

  • Zinc carnosine is especially studied for gut lining repair
  • Retinol (the active form of vitamin A) is gut-protective

6. Magnesium
Constipated? Magnesium can help “move things along” (gently).

➡️ Tip: Start low, go slow. Aim for 400mg daily to start. Especially if you have been under chronic stress for a long time.

🌾 Prebiotics: The Fertilizer for Your Gut Garden

If spore-based probiotics are the gardeners of your gut, then prebiotics are the fertilizer because they help feed and grow the good bugs that keep your digestion, mood, and hormones in balance.

Unlike probiotics (which are live bacteria), prebiotics are fibers and plant compounds your body doesn’t digest, but your good gut microbes love to munch on. When those good microbes eat, they produce short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which help reduce inflammation, improve gut lining integrity, and even impact brain health.

Food Prebiotic Fiber Type Benefits
Jerusalem Artichokes Inulin, FOS High in potassium + iron
Asparagus Inulin Supports detox + estrogen clearance
Garlic & Onions Inulin, FOS Antibacterial + anti-inflammatory
Leeks Inulin Great for digestion and estrogen metabolism
Bananas (especially green) Resistant starch Helps feed bifidobacteria
Oats (cooled overnight) Beta-glucans + RS3 Great for cholesterol + gut lining
Apples (with skin) Pectin Supports gut lining and regularity
Chicory Root Inulin Found in many fiber supplements
Dandelion Greens Inulin Liver and gut support
Flaxseeds & Chia Seeds Mucilage + soluble fiber Helps with elimination + estrogen excretion
Cooked + cooled potatoes Resistant starch (RS3) Enhances microbial diversity

Supplement Alternative To Fibre

You can also add targeted prebiotic blends like Just Thrive’s Prebiotic, which uses precision oligosaccharides that only feed beneficial bacteria (not the “weeds”). This is especially useful if you're sensitive to FODMAPs or fiber-rich foods.

🏋️‍♀️ HOW Fitness Fits In

Movement is magic for your microbiome and especially in perimenopause, when digestion slows, hormones fluctuate, and stress can take over.

Here’s exactly how the right types of exercise improve gut health:

💩 1. Improves Motility (A.K.A. Helps You Poop)
Regular movement helps “massage” your intestines and keep things moving through your digestive tract. This means:

  • Less bloating
  • Fewer backup toxins
  • More regular and satisfying BMs (💃)

Even just 15–20 minutes of walking after a meal can significantly reduce post-meal bloating and gas by helping move food through the system.

🌬️ 2. Lowers Gut-Damaging Stress Hormones
Chronic cortisol messes with your gut lining, leading to:

  • Leaky gut
  • Sluggish digestion
  • Mood and sleep issues

Gentle movement like:

  • Strength training
  • Pilates
  • Walking in nature
  • Yoga or breathwork

…helps calm the nervous system, reduce cortisol, and support the gut-brain axis.

🦠 3. Increases Microbial Diversity
Moderate exercise has been shown to increase the number and diversity of good gut bugs, especially those that produce butyrate, a powerful anti-inflammatory short-chain fatty acid.

This is key for:

  • Reducing belly fat
  • Improving insulin sensitivity
  • Calming gut-related inflammation

Too much cardio, though, especially when paired with under-eating or chronic stress, can have the opposite effect causing inflammation and damaging the gut lining.

💪 4. Enhances Nutrient Absorption
Muscle contractions improve blood flow to the gut which means your body can:

  • Digest food more efficiently
  • Absorb more nutrients
  • Detox more effectively

It also improves lymphatic drainage, which helps remove waste and toxins from the body faster.

✅ NOW: 3 Easy Gut-Loving Steps Today

  • Start a spore-based probiotic: Look for something like Just Thrive Probiotic (I love their gummies!)
  • Eat 30+ plants a week: Aim for fruits, veggies, legumes, spices, herbs. More diversity = better microbial diversity.
  • Ditch your chemical cleaners: Swap antibacterial sprays for vinegar + essential oil blends to protect your good gut flora.

The Midlife Muscle Secret We've Been Ignoring Too Long

Can we talk about something that might surprise you? Creatine isn't just for gym bros – it's actually one of the most important supplements we midlife women should be considering.

Here's why you should start taking creatine NOW: after 40, we lose muscle mass rapidly, our brain energy tanks, and recovery becomes painfully slow. Creatine directly addresses all three. It fuels our muscles, supports cognitive function (hello, brain fog!), and helps us bounce back faster from workouts.

Create's creatine gummies make this so much easier than choking down chalky powders. Finally, a form that doesn't make you feel like you're drinking sand! The research is crystal clear – creatine helps preserve lean muscle, improves strength, and even supports mood stability during hormonal fluctuations.

Ladies, we've been missing out on one of the most researched, effective supplements available. Our muscles, our brains, and our energy levels deserve this support.

Why Your Achy Joints Aren't Just “Part of Getting Older”

Let me tell you about something that's quietly revolutionizing my recovery routine – and it's not another supplement or gadget. It's Incrediwear's bamboo charcoal-infused fabric that actually increases blood flow and reduces inflammation.

Here's why this matters for us: midlife brings achy joints, slower recovery, and that persistent stiffness we pretend isn't happening. Whether it's my knees protesting after workouts, my elbows aching from too much tennis, or my feet screaming after long days, these aren't just “getting older” issues – they're circulation and inflammation problems.

Incrediwear's socks, knee sleeves, and elbow supports work by increasing blood flow at the cellular level. No compression, no weird sensations – just better circulation that helps reduce pain and speed recovery. I wear their socks during travel and sleep, and honestly? The difference in how I feel the next day is remarkable.

The Real Reason You're Tired (And It's Not What You Think)

Ever wonder why that afternoon energy crash hits harder now, or why your skin looks tired despite expensive serums? The answer might be happening at the cellular level – specifically, in your mitochondria.

New research reveals that after 40, our cellular powerhouses start accumulating damage faster than our bodies can clear it out. This mitochondrial decline affects everything from energy and muscle strength to skin health and recovery time. But here's the fascinating part: there's a compound called urolithin A that can actually help activate our cells' natural cleanup process.

Most of us can't produce meaningful amounts of this compound naturally, even if we're eating pomegranates daily. The science behind why this happens – and what we can actually do about it – is pretty eye-opening.

Read the full article to discover how supporting your mitochondria could change how you age from the inside out.

The Cellular Anti-Aging Secret Every Midlife Woman Should Know About

Can we have an honest conversation about what's really happening in our cells after 40? While we're busy managing careers, families, and everything else life throws at us, our mitochondria – those tiny powerhouses in every cell – are quietly declining. And that decline? It's behind so much of what we chalk up to “just getting older.”

I used to think fatigue, slower recovery, and that gradual loss of vitality were just inevitable parts of aging. Then I discovered the fascinating science behind urolithin A, a compound that's completely shifted my understanding of cellular health and what's actually possible as we age.

The Science of Cellular Cleanup

Here's what's happening at the cellular level: as we age, our mitochondria accumulate damage and become less efficient. Normally, our cells have a quality control system called mitophagy that removes these damaged mitochondria and replaces them with healthy ones. But this process slows down significantly with age, leaving us with an accumulation of dysfunctional cellular powerhouses.

Urolithin A is unique because it directly activates this mitophagy process. Think of it as your cellular cleaning crew – it helps identify and remove the mitochondria that aren't pulling their weight, making room for fresh, efficient ones.

The Pomegranate Paradox

You might have heard of urolithin A in connection with pomegranates. It's produced when specific gut bacteria break down compounds called ellagitannins found in pomegranates, walnuts, and berries. But here's the scientific reality: only about 40% of people have the right gut microbiome to produce meaningful amounts of urolithin A naturally.

Research shows that as we age, especially women dealing with hormonal fluctuations, our ability to produce urolithin A often diminishes further. Even if you're eating pomegranates daily, you might not be getting the cellular benefits you're hoping for.

What the Research Actually Shows

The clinical data on urolithin A is impressive. In randomized controlled trials, participants taking urolithin A showed:

  • 17% improvement in muscle endurance
  • Enhanced mitochondrial gene expression
  • Improved cellular energy production
  • Better biomarkers of muscle health

One particularly compelling study followed participants for four months and found measurably healthier mitochondria and improved physical performance compared to placebo groups.

Beyond Just Energy

What fascinates me most is how mitochondrial health connects to everything we experience in midlife. Poor mitochondrial function contributes to accelerated aging, decreased muscle mass, compromised immune function, and even cognitive decline. It affects skin cell turnover, collagen production, and our body's ability to repair daily damage.

This is why supporting mitochondrial health addresses multiple concerns simultaneously – it's not targeting one symptom but rather supporting the fundamental cellular processes that impact how we look, feel, and function.

The Practical Reality

Timeline Nutrition's Mitopure offers the first clinically tested form of urolithin A, available in powder and gummy forms for easy daily use. Their research-backed approach extends to skincare too, with MitoSkin targeting cellular aging from the outside in.

What I've observed personally is more consistent energy, better workout recovery, and improved skin vitality – the kind that comes from healthy cellular function rather than just topical treatments.

The Bottom Line

We can't stop aging, but we can absolutely support our cells' ability to maintain themselves optimally. Understanding and supporting mitochondrial health isn't just about feeling better today – it's about laying the foundation for how we'll age in the years to come.

Mini Pause #77: The (Totally Free) Fix for Low Energy

TL; DR (Too Long; Didn't Read)

Your circadian rhythm controls sleep, energy, mood, and metabolism and it gets thrown off easily.

Simple daily habits like getting morning light, eating within a 10-hour window, and dimming lights at night can reset your internal clock.

These changes are free, easy to implement, and have a big impact on how you feel.

WHY

If you’re looking for better sleep, healthier metabolism, and fewer mood swings then you should be looking at your circadian rhythms! Circadian rhythm is the pattern, or internal clock, that your body follows based on a 24-hour day.

Women, especially around midlife (hello, menopause!), can see big improvements in health just by syncing up certain habits or behaviours with these rhythms within the sleep-wake cycle.

WHAT

In my latest episode of Better! I talked with Dr, Satchin Panda about these rhythms and their control of nearly everything in your body: sleep patterns, hunger signals, hormone levels, and even your mood.

When these rhythms are off (think late-night snacks, screen time before bed, irregular sleep), it can lead to weight gain, poor sleep, and low energy.

BUT if you can get light at the right times, eat during specific windows, and be mindful of when and how you are exercising, you can dramatically boost your health.

HOW

  • Morning light is your new BFF: Step outside within an hour of waking for at least 15-30 minutes. It boosts mood, resets your internal clock, and increases daytime alertness.
  • Eat within a 10-hour window: For example, breakfast at 8 AM, dinner by 6 PM. Eating late can mess with your insulin, leaving blood sugar high and making fat storage easier.
  • Dim the lights after sunset: Bright lights after sunset can keep you awake. Use dimmers or warm lamps, and consider blue-light-blocking glasses if screens are a must.
  • Exercise in the late afternoon: It's safer (you're warmed up), boosts performance, and helps control blood sugar better than morning workouts. But if you prefer working out in the morning (like me), don’t worry! Any exercise is better than none!
  • Keep caffeine early: Avoid caffeine after 1 PM as it stays in your system and can lower your sleep quality.

NOW

  • Start tomorrow with sunlight: Commit to stepping outside within the first hour of waking. Put those toes in some grass if you can!
  • Set a 10-hour eating window: Decide your eating times and stick to them this week. Notice if you feel any changes in your mood or energy.
  • Adjust evening lighting: Swap bright overhead lights for dim, cozy lamps tonight. Create a sleep-supporting environment.

These simple changes are like hitting the reset button on your body and, as a bonus, they are easy, free, and incredibly effective.

WHAT I RECOMMEND

Bon Charge Red Light Face Mask – Summer Sale Now On!

If your circadian rhythm is out of whack and your skin’s been looking a little “meh” lately, red light therapy might be your new favourite ritual. It boosts your mitochondrial function (basically, your internal battery), helps with hormonal balance, and supports collagen production—especially helpful during perimenopause when estrogen starts to peace out. I use the Bon Charge Red Light Face Mask and love that I can wear it while sipping tea or scrolling emails. Their 25% off summer sale is on now, so if you’ve been curious, this is the time to try it.

LMNT’s Lemonade Salts

If you’re working on syncing your circadian rhythm, don’t sleep on proper hydration.

Most of us are walking around low on electrolytes (especially sodium) which messes with energy, mood, and sleep. I’ve been loving LMNT’s Lemonade Salt for a no-junk, sugar-free fix that actually works. One stick gives you sodium, potassium, and magnesium in the right ratios to restore balance fast. I feel hydrated and more energized within minutes of taking it. Plus I love LOVE the taste!

Bonus: grab a free sample pack with your purchase while this new summer flavor lasts.

Qualia Senolytic

One of the BEST things we can do to age well is to help our body regain what it did best IN OUR PRIME: getting rid of old worn out cells that no longer perform their useful function. These senescent cells (aka Zombie Cells) linger in us, wasting our energy and nutrition and affecting the healthy cells around them. As these cells accumulate with age they contribute to joint discomfort, sluggish energy, slow workout recovery, and SO many things that make us feel OLD.

Which is why I LOVE Qualia Senolytic. It combines 9 plant-derived ingredients into a clinically tested formula to SLAY your zombie cells and make room for young, healthy thriving cells to flourish, taking YEARS off how old you feel.

You can try Qualia Senolytic up to 50% off backed by a 100 day money back guarantee at www.qualialife.com/drstephanie, and use the code DRSTEPHANIE for 15% off your purchase.

Mini Pause #75: Hair Loss In Midlife (And What You Can Do About It)

TL; DR (Too Long; Didn't Read)

Yes, hair loss in midlife is super common—and yes, it can still feel completely devastating.

Your ponytail gets thinner, your scalp feels more visible, and your bathroom floor starts to look like it’s wearing a wig.

What’s going on? Hormones are shifting, follicles are aging, and your hair’s natural growth cycle is slowing down.

BUT (and this is a big but), there are things you can do to help. Red light therapy, hormone support, and follicle-loving nutrients and products can bring your strands back to life.

WHY

Let’s Talk About WHY It’s Happening. Hair thinning or loss during perimenopause and menopause is incredibly common—and honestly, pretty upsetting.

You might be surprised to know that by the time you notice thinning, you’ve probably already lost about 50% of your hair volume.

Wild, right? Knowing why this happens makes it easier to take action—and feel more in control.

WHAT

How Hair Actually Grows (and Falls Out)

Your hair goes through three main phases:

  • Anagen (Growth) – This is your hair’s growth mode.
  • Catagen (Transition) – Growth slows, and your follicle prepares to shed.
  • Telogen (Resting) – The strand falls out, and the follicle chills before starting over.

When we’re younger, the anagen phase can last years, thanks to high estrogen levels keeping our hair long, thick, and shiny.

But as estrogen and progesterone decline in midlife, that growth phase gets shorter. Hair starts falling out faster than it can grow back—and that makes long, full hair much harder to maintain.

Meet the Hair Wreckers: Hormones + Senescent Cells
So, what’s really messing with your hair?

  • Hormonal Decline: As estrogen and progesterone dip, the growth cycle shortens. Hair gets thinner, and new growth struggles to keep up.
  • Senescent Cells: These are aging cells that stop functioning but stick around causing inflammation. Around your hair follicles, they create the perfect storm for shedding and thinning.

I recently interviewed Alessandra Zonari, stem cell biologist and co-founder of OneSkin, on the BETTER! podcast. She and her team developed a peptide that helps clear out those senescent cells around hair follicles—and guess what?

I’ve been using their OS-01 Hair Serum consistently for 8 weeks and I’ve got baby hairs coming in. Amazing, right?

HOW

What Can You Do? Let’s get to the good stuff: how to help your hair thrive in midlife.

  • Red Light Therapy
This is one of my favourite biohacks. Red light helps energize hair follicles, reduce inflammation, and can even help your body clear senescent cells. I personally use BonCharge Red Light Panels and aim for 10–20 minutes daily.
  • Load Up on Minerals
Your hair loves nutrients. Make sure you’re getting plenty of:
✔️Iron – Helps deliver oxygen to follicles. (Red meat, lentils, spinach)
✔️Zinc – Needed for follicle repair. (Pumpkin seeds, beef, seafood)
✔️Magnesium – Boosts hair strength. (Almonds, avocado, leafy greens)
✔️Selenium – Protects against damage. (Brazil nuts, fish, eggs)
✔️Silica – For shine and resilience. (Oats, cucumbers, bananas)
✔️Copper – Supports pigment and density. (Mushrooms, nuts, seeds)
  • Clean Up Your Haircare Routine
Ditch harsh shampoos and heat styling (or at least go easy). Use products that target aging follicles and support healthy growth. OneSkin’s OS-01 Hair Serum is a game-changer—especially if you’re trying to rescue thinning areas.

NOW

What To Do Next (AKA Your Hair Rescue Plan)

✨ Start Red Light Therapy – Try 10–20 minutes a day. It’s relaxing and restorative.
🥗 Eat for Your Hair – Prioritize protein, good fats, and those follicle-loving minerals.
🧴 Use Smarter Products – Swap in serums like OS-01 Hair that support cellular repair and follicle rejuvenation.

Strengthen Your Foundation with Peluva

As women age, the risk of falling—and suffering serious injuries like fractures—rises dramatically. In fact, falls are the leading cause of ER visits in women over 65!

But here’s the good news: there are simple things you can start doing today to protect your future mobility. One of the most important? Improving your proprioception, which is your body’s ability to sense where it is in space. It’s what keeps you balanced, coordinated, and steady on your feet.

One easy way to boost proprioception is by wearing barefoot or minimalist shoes. Unlike conventional shoes that weaken your feet and limit natural movement, barefoot shoes help activate the small stabilizing muscles in your feet.

My absolute favourite? Peluva’s barefoot shoes. (I own three pairs!) They’re cute, comfy, and actually work to strengthen and realign your feet with every step. Whenever I wear them, I feel more confident in my stride and know that I’m improving my long-term mobility and independence.

Mini Pause #74: Sports for Longevity

TL; DR (Too Long; Didn't Read)

I am all about a life well-lived.

I have been intrigued recently about sports that increase and improve longevity, and delightfully, sports like tennis, pickleball, badminton, squash, and cross-country skiing are among this list.

They can significantly boost longevity by improving cardiovascular health, enhancing cognitive function, supporting muscular strength, and, perhaps most importantly, fostering social connections.

WHY

A few weeks ago – I was playing tennis one morning and got to speak with one of the players in the court next to me after our session. He is 75, plays 5 days a week for 2 hours a day. I was literally in awe of him (and his serve!)

The same thing has happened to me on the cross country trails in the winter. I am lapped by smiling elderly women and men who are just flying through the course.

They are potent reminders of how I want to age. And if they have figured it out by playing tennis or skiing, I am all over it.

Movement diversification is a crucial element to aging well. Just like a diversified financial portfolio can protect our investments, movement diversification is also important.

What makes these sports so special is they specifically combine multiple factors associated with aging well:

  • Aerobic exercise
  • Coordination
  • Strength
  • And social interaction

I would also add that racquet sports add an element of strategy. You have to be thinking about setting up to hit the ball well, but also what you can hit that wins points. It keeps you mentally sharp.

Racquet sports also use a lot of side to side motion. Nerds like me refer to this as the coronal plane which is sorely lacking in everyday life. This side to side motion keeps tendons and ligaments in the ankles, knees and hips healthy, and it also helps develop core strength, another crucial component for aging well.

WHAT

Here's a fun summary of the benefits of these sports:

Racquet Sports (Tennis, Pickleball, Badminton, Squash):

    • Improves cardiovascular endurance and heart health.
    • Enhances cognitive skills such as strategy, quick decision-making, and hand-eye coordination.
    • Strengthens major muscle groups, maintaining overall muscular health.
    • Fosters social connections, reducing stress and promoting mental health.

That last point, while simple, is hard to overlook. It's simply a delight to have friends who share the same interest as you, and you can connect while exercising together. In this way, pickleball or tennis is the medium by which you are connecting with others, and getting a good workout is just a side benefit.

Cross-Country Skiing:

    • Superior aerobic conditioning and cardiovascular health due to full-body engagement.
    • Low-impact activity preserving joint health.
    • Enhances balance, coordination, and core strength, which are crucial for injury prevention and daily functional activities.

If I may be so bold (and expect more on this in the future), with all the hype around muscle, what seems to be lost is that in order to age well, you MUST, I repeat, MUST preserve your joints.

You can’t develop muscle if the joint is destroyed.

Joints are the unsung hero of aging well. No joints, no muscle. Period.

This is why I love cross country skiing over all other types of skiing. The injury risk is so low, the impact is low, and it is just you, the sound of snow crunching under your feet, and the random sounds of birds, and babbling brooks that have not yet frozen over. It is heaven on earth.

HOW

If you are a gym girlie like me and perhaps looking to diversify your movement portfolio in your training sessions, you can also integrate some sport specific training for these sports to augment your physical literacy required to do them well.

For Racquet Sports Training:

    • Agility drills (lateral movements, footwork patterns on a ladder are great).
    • Strength training emphasizing legs, core, and shoulders (lunges, rotational core exercises, overhead presses, Pilates).
    • HIIT and jump training to boost speed and power (think switch lunges, jumping squats, or one footed jumping patterns on and off plyo boxes
    • Balance exercises to prevent falls and improve court mobility.

Cross-Country Skiing Training:

    • Endurance training through steady state running, cycling, or rowing.
    • Core stabilization exercises (planks, side planks, Russian twists, Pilates).
    • Upper-body strength training (pull-ups, push-ups, rowing movements).
    • Balance and coordination drills, including single-leg balance and proprioceptive exercises.

NOW

Your easiest 3 next steps:

1. Try a Beginner Session: Find local clubs or groups to try these sports.

2. Add Cross-Training: Start with simple strength or balance routines to complement the sports.

3. Commit Socially: Engage a friend or group to enhance motivation, enjoyment, and accountability.

LMNT's Lemonade Salt

It's easy to forget that our sweat isn't just water. But why is it that we only down a glass of water after finishing a workout or running around on a hot day? Our sweat consists of water and sodium, potassium, and magnesium.
